Cultural Journal Report:
European Commission report finds Romanians are among the least culturally engaged in Europe.
author: Shaun Turton
date: November 6, 2013 Click here to read this article! brief summary: This article is about Romanians being some of the least culturally engaged in Europe. It has been found that in the last year, only 51 percent of respondents read at least one book, 59 percent watching a cultural program on TV, and only 25 percent going to a concert, which are just some of the statistics given in the article. More than any country asked, Romanians blamed not having a good selection or the offerings being of poor quality, while others blamed not being interested or simply just not having enough time. The article compared the above statistics and more with the statistics of other European countries, which are surprisingly more cultured than many Romanians. |
my opinion on the topic:
This is a great topic of debate. I can completely understand not having enough time to engage in cultural activities such as going to a play or concert, seeing a movie in the theatre, or visiting a gallery. Those are time-consuming activities that may cost obscene amounts of money and might not be of interest to the person. But not reading a book in a year? With all the opportunities to read instead of staring into a tiny bright screen or blankly looking out the window on your bus ride home, how could anyone not find the time to sneak in fifteen minutes of reading time? With the millions of book choices out there, surely everyone would be able to find something of their interest? I don't agree with the 30 percent of Romanians who said they don't have a good selection of material, because while I personally have never been to Romania, there must be book stores, and if not, Amazon and other online sellers ship to the country. The problem isn't the selection, it's the people not willing to expand their horizons and take the time to partake in cultural activities. |
how does this relate to culture?:
The article isn't about culture in Romania, it's about the lack of culture in Romania. The people living there are growing farther and farther apart from their local and popular culture, not taking the time to branch out and experience the arts, and not even being able to find the time to read a book once a year. This won't only effect the people, but also the future of the country. What would a country look like if none of it's citizens went to plays or concerts or read any books? The cultures of that country would slowly be lost more and more with each generation and soon be lost, added to the growing list of extinct cultures, and forgotten by everyone. If Romanian don't begin to see the error in their ways, they might lose their culture and with it everything that makes their country as unique as it is. |
